NoHeart by Ronnell D. Porter has a lot of things going for it. The author is quick to explain what Hoodoo is and how it differs from Voodoo. It’s an important distinction. I’m sure it will play a part later on in the book.
The author lays the foundation for the rest of the book but he doesn’t overload you with details and backstory. He gives you just enough to get you interested. You get a feel for Charlotte and her teacher’s relationship but not the entire story. The writing and pacing of the sample was easy to follow. The author pays particular attention to dialogue. All of these things combined are enough to make me want to read more.
I’m probably going to wait until next weekend to read and review this novel.
